December 22, 2017

The holiday season can be especially crazy with so many things to do, shopping that seems to never be complete, and tons of pressure to find that perfect gift for friends and family. With 2017 coming to a close, and 2018 right around the corner, Quinn and I have spent some time reflecting on how the first 9 months of business has gone for Simkins Brothers’ Sweets. Sure, there are a few things that we would have done differently, as is normal when starting a business, but there are also many things that we would do exactly the same if we were given the chance to do it all over again. 2017 has set us up for an exciting 2018.

One topic that comes to mind in particular that Quinn and I try to balance to the best of our ability is maintaining a healthy work/life balance. There is not one definition on what this actually means, as it is different for everyone. This is also a particularly difficult thing to do, especially when you have a startup business. There are so many things to get done, and there are a finite number of hours in a day to accomplish it all. It is so easy to get caught up in thinking about all of the things that you have to do that all other tasks, such as exercise, family, friends, and many other important items of your life get put on hold.

You can easily spend hours surfing the web reading hundreds of articles about this company or that company that was started by individuals who spent 20 hours a day working on their company to ensure that it grew. While having plenty of drive is important, it is easy to become stale and actually stifle growth and creativity by overworking and not keeping a healthy work/life balance. Sometimes the best thing to do is also the hardest thing to do. I have had some of my best ideas after feeling extremely frustrated and just taking a break and coming back to it after a while.

One way that Quinn and I accomplish this is we allow time every day to run, spend time with family and friends, pray and spend time with God, or some other fun activity to ensure that we are not grinding ourselves into the ground. Quinn and I are extremely blessed to be able to enjoy running together. There are some runs where we discuss work topics, but there are also days where we agree not to discuss work, so that we can clear our minds and take a much-needed step back and hit the “refresh” button.

I, for sure, am not going to tell you how you should balance your work life and your personal life. That is up to each individual and everyone approaches this in a different way. However, I will encourage you to find things that you are passionate about outside of work and pursue them with a full heart. And remember, especially this time of year, it is always the people in your life who make the difference! Quinn and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
